Introduction: Why the Installation Process Matters

Window film is only as good as the installation behind it. The best film in the world, applied carelessly, will bubble, peel, and fail within a year. Contamination under the film during installation creates permanent defects. Incorrect cut patterns leave bare edges. Poor squeegee technique traps water pockets that take weeks to become visible.

The process matters. Understanding it — from first contact to final delivery — helps you set the right expectations, ask the right questions, and get the most out of your investment.

Here's exactly what working with Armoured Films looks like.

Getting Your Quote

The first step is our online instant quote tool at armouredfilms.ca. You select your vehicle type from the dropdown, choose your film type (carbon or ceramic), and select the coverage option you want: front two windows only, rear half, full front and rear, or windshield add-on.

The quote is real pricing — not a "starting from" estimate that balloons when you show up. What the tool shows you is what you'll pay.

If you have questions the tool doesn't answer — an unusual vehicle, a combination package, fleet pricing — you can reach us at contact@armouredfilms.ca or 587-885-4192 and we'll get you sorted.

Choosing Your Film

Once you have a quote, you'll select your film. We offer Global Window Films' carbon and ceramic series. If you're not sure which is right for your vehicle, the carbon vs ceramic comparison article covers the practical differences in detail.

The short version: ceramic gives you superior heat rejection, especially at lighter VLT percentages. Carbon is a premium product at a more accessible price point. Both carry lifetime manufacturer warranties.

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is the other choice to make. Alberta has specific legal requirements: front side windows must allow at least 70% VLT, back side and rear windows have no restriction. Most of our clients choose 35% for rear windows (dark but not limo-dark) and either 70% or a light ceramic option for fronts.

Scheduling Your Valet Pickup

When you complete your order, you'll select a pickup date and time. Our valet service covers Calgary and surrounding communities including Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Okotoks, and Springbank at no extra cost.

You provide your address — home or workplace — and we dispatch pickup at your selected time. You don't need to go anywhere.

Pickup is handled professionally and with care. We document your vehicle's pre-existing condition at pickup, including any existing chips, scratches, or damage.

The Day of Installation

While your vehicle is with us, here's what happens:

Surface Preparation: Every window to be filmed is cleaned thoroughly with a film-safe cleaning solution. Any contamination — dust, oils, adhesive residue from previous tint, construction overspray — is removed. This step cannot be rushed. A single dust particle under the film creates a bubble; we don't leave until the surface is clean.

Film Cutting: We use a plotted cutting system for precision patterns matched to your vehicle's window dimensions. Clean cuts mean no gaps at edges and no raw cut lines visible from outside.

Application: Film is applied wet using a slip solution, then squeegeed to remove water and activate the adhesive. The window is then inspected under light for any anomalies before moving to the next.

Final Inspection: We check every window under shop lighting before releasing the vehicle. Minor installation artifacts — micro-water pockets that haven't fully dried — are normal and will clear within a few days. Actual defects are addressed before delivery.

Delivery: Your vehicle is returned to your address clean and on time. You'll receive a brief walkthrough of the care instructions and your warranty documentation.

Cure Time and the First Few Days

Freshly installed window tint looks slightly hazy or has small water pockets visible in certain light. This is completely normal and expected. The adhesive is still curing and residual water from installation is working its way out through the film edges.

Under Calgary conditions:

  • Summer: Most of the haze and pockets clear within 3–5 days with regular sun exposure.
  • Spring/Fall: Allow 7–10 days. Cooler temperatures slow the curing process.
  • Winter: Full cure can take 2–3 weeks in cold weather. The film is still perfectly functional and durable; it just takes longer for the visual artifacts to fully clear.

Don't be alarmed by the appearance during this period. If anything is still visible after the expected cure window, contact us.

The 5-Day Window Rule — Critical

Do not roll down your windows for the first five days after installation. This is the single most important care instruction we give, and failing to follow it can void your installation warranty.

Here's why: the film is bonded to the glass with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that hasn't yet reached full cure strength. Rolling the window down drags the film edges against the window seal. At best, this creates edge lifting. At worst, it peels the film away from the glass entirely — usually in a way that requires complete reinstallation.

We mark this prominently on your care card because it trips up clients who forget. Set a reminder in your phone. Write it on the dash. However it takes to remember: no windows down for five days.

Long-Term Care Instructions

After the cure period, window tint requires minimal maintenance:

Cleaning: Use a clean microfibre cloth and an ammonia-free glass cleaner. Ammonia — found in many common products including Windex — attacks the film's adhesive over time and will cause premature failure. Look for automotive glass cleaners specifically labelled ammonia-free.

Avoid abrasives: Don't use squeegees, rough sponges, or abrasive cloths on tinted windows. The film surface is scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof.

Automatic car washes: Touchless (spray only) car washes are fine. Brush-type automatic washes drag against the film edges and can cause lifting, particularly at corners. We recommend touchless or hand washing.

Warranty Coverage

Every installation at Armoured Films comes with:

  • Lifetime manufacturer warranty on Global Window Films products, covering material defects including discolouration, bubbling from manufacturing causes, and delamination
  • 5-year installation warranty covering edge lifting, peeling, and delamination caused by our installation work

Warranty claims are handled through us — you don't need to navigate manufacturer processes directly. Contact us at contact@armouredfilms.ca or 587-885-4192 and we coordinate the inspection and resolution.

Conclusion

Professional window tint installation isn't complicated, but it requires the right materials, the right technique, and the right care in the days after. The Armoured Films process is designed to make the experience as easy as possible — you don't even need to drive to a shop.
